Soumitra Mallik Biography

Born in a traditional Bengali family of North Calcutta, an area which has been regarded a centre of the Bengal Renaissance of the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
He did his schooling from Metropolitan Institution in Kolkata. This School was founded by the great nineteenth century social reformer and educationist, Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar. Swami Vivekananda, the Hindu philosopher monk is one of the famous alumni of his School. Soumitra was fortunate to have been taught by great teachers of his times. The scholarships of some of these luminaries were of national and international repute. He inherited, sometimes by choice and sometimes inherently, the thirst for knowledge from these polymaths. In the twilight years of his life, Soumitra perceives how remotely attainable this ‘dream of quenching the thirst’ can be!

The world in its myriad varieties started opening up to Soumitra in his early youth, by virtue of his association with Young Men’s Christian Association of Kolkata, where he took part and later organized a gamut of cultural, welfare and sporting activities. This is where he grew up in a social milieu marked by cultural contrasts of the different strata of his society.

These years significantly inspired him in the ideology of Jesus Christ, which has since been a major source of his steadfast inspiration for selfless service to students, through teaching, that turned out to be the lifelong vocation for him.

He studied physics and French Language, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in the University of Calcutta and in Alliance Française de Calcutta, under Ministry of Education, France, between 1980 and 1989.

He spent the first decade of his career, teaching in two esteemed schools of India – St. Paul’s School in Darjeeling and Wynberg Allen School in Mussoorie.

During this period, he studied Education, at undergraduate level, in North Bengal University, West Bengal and at postgraduate level in Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu in 1993 and 1997 respectively.

Recently he studied English Language and Literature, at postgraduate level, in Indira Gandhi National Open University.

Mr Mallik performed the responsibility of the External Supervisor to the University of London A – Level Physics Practical Examination at Woodstock School, Mussoorie.

He presented and published a paper on “The Common School System”, at the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Govt. of India, on January 22 & 23, 1998, being selected through a national level screening. This paper has subsequently been published in a book of NCERT, entitled Common School System.
